Retriever FYI

We want to thank David Colwell, the Official Sketch Artist for the Derby National for providing us all the test set-up diagrams for this event and for their use on the blog.

But since they were for the use of the Judges and were used to set up the Official Test Books, the lines on the diagrams lead to the GUNS and not the birds. (This is kind of opposite from the normal diagrams you might be used to seeing on the blog.) We wanted to let you know so that it would be easier for you to better understand the tests and in relation to their descriptions.

TEST 8 – Land/Water Double with One Retired

Series 8 – Land/Water Double with One Retired

The right retired at 218 yards

The left hand gun station at 218 yards
The right hand memory bird is a dead drake thrown slight angle back right at 218 yards. This bird is a dead drake and the guns retire when the handler sends the dog for the left hand bird. For this bird, the dog runs down the slope, across the largest of three ponds and up the other side to get the bird thrown near the woods. The second bird is a dead drake thrown angle back left at 218 yards. The dog will run down the slope, transverse a land bridge (or levee) and then continue back up the facing slope to get his bird.  There is a large brush pile and several clumps of grass on the far slope that tend to push the dogs to the right instead of them taking a more direct line to the bird. The test takes 5-6 minutes per dog.
